Seriál Tajomné hrady v Karpatoch si kladie za cieľ priniesť informácie o hradoch, respektive ich zrúcaninách, ktoré nepatria medzi známe a bežne navštevované. Na Slovensku je takých pomerne veľa, veď spomedzi vyše stovky hradov a zámkov je len menšia časť cieľom masového turizmu a záujmu. Bratislavský, Spišský, Oravský či Trenčiansky hrad sú notoricky známe pojmy, ale málokto vie, že napríklad okrem Červeného Kameňa je v Malých Karpatoch aj zrúcanina Bieleho Kameňa. A nad Zlatými Moravcami existuje zrúcanina Čierneho hradu. V Štúrove zase stával hrad či hradisko Kokot, aj s rovnomennou osadou bol v 16.storočí zničený Turkami (ale údajne ešte do 19.stor. sa tento názov používal ako alternatíva maďarského názvu Štúrova Párkany). Ani meno Čeklís pravdepodobne väčšine ľudí nič nepovie, hoci zvyšky hradu tohto mena stoja kúsok za Bratislavou, v Bernolákove. Niektoré zrúcaniny sú také zabudnuté, že k nim nevedie ani turistická značka.

Na Slovensku sa do dnešnej doby zachovalo 136 hradov (respektíve ich zrúcanín), po niekoľkých zaniknutých hradoch nie sú žiadne pamiatky. Niektoré z ruín sú dnes už len vo forme terénnych hrán a náznakov niekdajších stavieb s ťažko určiteľnou pôvodnou dispozíciou. Spolu so zámkami, kaštieľmi a kúriami je tu dovedna 223 historických šľachtických sídiel. Na ich početnosť je obyvateľstvo hrdé, hoci číslo trochu bledne v porovnaní s krajinami na západ od Slovenska – v Rakúsku evidujú 990 hradov, zámkov a kaštieľov a v Českej republike dokonca 1239 (tento počet zahŕňa aj niekoľko zaniknutých hradov bez dochovaných zvyškov). Treba si však uvedomiť, že veľkú časť Slovenska tvorí málo prístupný lesnatý horský terén a najmä v minulosti bolo jeho územie len veľmi riedko osídlené a malo výrazne vidiecky character, veľkolepejších stavieb tu teda nepribúdalo toľko koľko v bohatších krajinách na západ od Slovenska. Naopak Maďarsko, Poľsko aj Ukrajina sú na podobné stavby ešte chudobnejšie.

Spišský hrad bol podľa štatistík najnavštevovanejším slovenským hradom v sezóne 2015, ďalšími v poradí boli Bojnický zámok a Oravský hrad.

Pri pohľade na zoznam si môžeme všimnúť zaujímavú informáciu – výrazná väčšina stavieb typu hrad pochádza z 13.storočia. Je pravdou, že mnohé z nich stoja na mieste pôvodných, väčšinou drevených, hradísk z oveľa skoršieho obdobia, no až v 13. stor. došlo k výstavbe mohutných opevnených kamenných komplexov s typickými gotickými prvkami, ako ich poznáme dnes. Jednou z hlavných príčin tak hromadného rozvoja kamenných hradov v pomerne krátkom období boli teda dozaista tatárske vpády (správne išlo o Mongolov) z r. 1241-42. Pustošivé nájazdy dovtedy nevídanej intenzity vyvolali potrebu posilnenia bezpečnosti sídiel stredovekej mocenskej elity. Impulzom bolo aj odporúčanie vtedajšieho uhorského panovníka Bela IV (vládol v rokoch 1235-1270). Jeho motiváciou bolo okrem hrozby z východy aj posilnenie západných hraníc krajiny, čoho hlavným prvkom mala byť sústava obranných hradov v oblasti Malých a Karpát a Považia. Pri výbere lokalít pre svoje sídla vtedajšia šľachta preferovala odľahlé, z bezpečnostného hľadiska ideálne miesta. Najčastejšie to bolo na zle prístupných strmých vrcholoch, nezriedka aj vo veľkej vzdialenosti od vtedajších komunikačných osí. Výhodu v podobe vysokej bezpečnosti však o niekoľko storočí neskôr začali vyvažovať mnohé nevýhody. Zlá dostupnosť prekážala samotným majiteľom hradov a výrazným mínusom musela byť tiež ich obrovská náročnosť na údržbu pri zvyšujúcich sa nárokoch na komfort, ktoré s meniacou sa dobou prichádzali, a ktorým robustné chladné pevnosti neboli schopné vyhovieť. Majitelia tak boli nútení začať svoje odľahlé sídla postupne opúšťať a od 18.stor. väčšina hradov pustla. Do dnešnej doby sa ich v obyvateľnej podobe zachovalo len málo, a to len tie lepšie dostupné, s polohou blízko komunikácií a obývaných oblastí. Zo zvyšku sa stali hradné zrúcaniny v rôznom stupni rozpadu. Dnes patria medzi najobľúbenejšie ciele turistov, no nie všetky sú v rovnakej miere navštevované. Samozrejme, viac priťahujú romanticky sa týčiace zvyšky veží, palácov a hradieb na skalnatých vyvýšeninách, ako len ťažko rozoznateľné pozostatky múrov, ľudskému zraku schované v hustom lese, navyše mnoho kilometrov od najbližšej cesty. Tie môžu byť ale pre svoju neopozeranosť pre mnohých zahalené určitým tajomnom a tento seriál bude práve o nich.
